Derrick A. Humphries is a founding partner of the law office of Humphries & Partners, PLLC, based in Washington, DC with a diverse, global legal services network.
He credits his tenure as Legal Counsel and Media Director for the Congressional Black Caucus for his "Think Globally, Act Locally" approach to solution-finding. He credits his association with Robert Millender, Robert McLean, David Bradley, Dennis Bakke, and members of the Watergate Fellowship for his approach to business. He has spoken in settings ranging from England for the International Association of Nurses, Ghana for the Association of Black Psychologists, the Sudan for the Congressional Black Caucus, South Africa for the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Scholarship Fund, Denmark for Pyrocap Fire Technology, to the Bahamas and Antigua for the Afro-Caribbean Anglican Consultation, the Eddie Smith Leadership Institute of the National Dental Association and France for a Men's Bible fellowship.
Mr. Humphries represents clients with domestic and international interests such as the Philippine Nurses Association of America, the National Dental Association, the National Black Nurses Association, the National Alliance of Black School Educators, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Foundation, the National Association of Indian Nurses in America, the Association of Black Psychologists, the Student National Medical Association, the Church of God in Christ Public Policy Institute, the Asian American Pacific Islanders Nurses Association, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators Labor Roundtable, the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association, the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters Foundation, the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, the Student National Dental Association, as well as General Motors, Unified Industries, Imagine Schools, the Stan Lee Foundation, the Dr. Dorothy I. Height Education Foundation and various other Foundations and businesses. His activities include the Colin L. Powell Leadership Club and providing the opportunity for students to learn about various occupations, being exposed to information technology, and learning the responsibilities that a job requires.
As a primary architect of a General Motors/Meharry Medical College/U.S. Department of Transportation partnership, he served as a key participant as part of a $1.2 billion national initiative to increase seat belt use.
Mr. Humphries is responsible for the Billy Davis music publishing enterprises based in New York City. The music publishing catalogue includes the iconic song "I'd Like To Teach The World to Sing," and all-time favorite songs such as "Rescue Me" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher," which was included on the rotation of background music during President Barack Obama's successful campaign to become America's 44th President.
Mr. Humphries, an author, has been honored with many Board Memberships, awards and recognition of his service. He has initiated a series of critical thinking dialogues with emerging leaders focused on looking through today's problems into tomorrow's successes involving students and parents at the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia and other think-tank environments.
Mr. Humphries has served, among others, as a member of the Advisory Board of Templar Corporation, an advanced data access information technology firm, the St. Albans working group on Alcohol and Drug Use by Students, the governing boards of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Washington National Cathedral, as the Cathedral's Head Usher for 10 years and as a key member of the Cathedral's organizational team for the Inaugural Prayer Services for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Jr., and Barack Obama. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Humphries, the eldest of 13 children, is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Law. A member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Michigan Bar, and a life member of the National Bar Association, he has served as an adjunct Professor of Law at Howard University Law School.
He currently is a member of the Board of Directors of the Tutu Institute for Prayer and Pilgrimage, the National Capitol Region of the Boy Scouts of America and the University of Michigan School of Nursing Board of Visitors and has served as the President of the Board for Woodley House, Inc. He is also a life member of the University of Michigan Letterman's Club (football), and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He is married and the proud father of three sons, Taylor, Alexander and Auguste, and one daughter, Jonna.
